the whole thing just blows. the fact that that many people were pissed in the first place doesnt work out for the roo atmosphere. thing is no matter what the 'real' reason is, those who are super pissed arent really gonna care...cuz these kinda people get swept away in the chaos and madness of it.
I heard from someone that the flying monkey he uses to travel got some serious diareah from the dennies they stopped at on the way to roo, so that made him a little late. but i mean, what can you really do in that situation?

Yeah, I talked to several people who went to the Phil Lesh show and they all said the same thing that the earlier post said, that Lesh said he was asked to end his show early so Kanye could go on, so I would tend to believe that was true. I'm sure we will be able to hear when/if bootlegs of Phil's show are posted. If this is the case than I lose even more respect for Kanye, and there isn't much there in the first place. Phil Lesh is a music legend and, more importantly a Bonnaroo icon. To disrespect someone like Lesh is just tastless. I do, however, think that it is quite ironic than Kanye had his set time changed so he could do his glow in the dark show, yet his procrastination led to this being ruined by the sunrise.
Much respect to Mr. Randolph for standing up for Phil and for all of those who waited up to see West.
yeah, i had heard from someone that the reason he didn't play is he didn't want any competition during his set.
From what I've been reading here and around the web, that's what all the security people were saying and, thus, I believe is true. Dozens of unofficial sources trump the "official" source in my book.
Someone at my camp next to me was making statements like "Kanye just set the bar for every hip-hop artist ever to perform at Roo in the future," and "Kanye got just what he wanted. He waited so long so that all of his 'true' fans were the only one's hanging around" <that one actually makes sense to me. I seem to remember a thread with an article about Kanye that was a response a critique of his "Glow in the Dark Tour" (mainly that it was cheesy and weak). And Kany eresponded by saying that he only wants true fans at his shows, and if you don't really like him then stay home.....blah blah blah.
So maybe that is a little explanation as to why he was so late. Waiting for all the hippies to go see a REAL act like Phil Lesh, Ghostland or Sigur Ros. I don't believe that it took two hours to break down PJ and set up Kanye.

I believe that they asked Phil to cut it short for Kanye, because he stopped WELL before 4:00, and the next day at the acoustic show, one of them asked, "is Kanye still playing?"
He's a fool. If you're gonna talk that much smack, you had damn well better bring it, and he failed to do so. Failed. Very poor timing, especially with him trying to prove himself. I came away with more respect for Metallica (by far), but I can't say anything even close to the same about Mr. West. Very bad decisions on his part.

A lot of what you say makes sense... especially the fan aspect of it. Something to think about... except for the fact that this wasn't a Kanye festival. It was a music festival. And I do believe that it could take two hours to break down PJ and set up kanye... but I also don't understand the math of PJ overplaying an hour and that being the reason why kanye was two hours late. Ahh well, kanye's the space traveler... not me
the thing that pissed me off about this kanye thing is that he messed up the schedule for sunday. israel vibration ended up getting the major shaft as they got moved from the what stage to the other tent...also cutting their set by 15 minutes. they did this because they didnt have the what stage area cleaned up in time. i wandered around trying to figure out where israel vibration was playing and by the time i found out, i had completely missed the show. thanks kanye, and im sure israel vibration gives you their thanks too.
i just saw the explanation in the BBC article about kanye, and can tell you that excuse may be complete bull. it may have contributed to the lateness but according to my sources kanye was not even at roo to begin with. my friend who had the awesome job of driving artists around bonnaroo, told me that he was not even at the festival, as he pretty much gets all the news on who needs to be where. i may be wrong but i'm almost certain i'm not.
Things that Kanye Quacked Up (please feel free to edit and add)
1. My sleep. I realize not important to anyone else, but was to me. 2. Chef planned on falling asleep to the beautiful sounds of Phil. Instead she got Kanye. You don't mess with Chef. 3. Phil had to cut his set short. Are you kidding me, ask a God of music to stop playing? 4. As stated above, Sunday shows. I wanted to catch some israel from my tent as I was too rashed up to walk good by that point. 5. All in all, everything from Saturday night on was in some part affected by Kanye, and it should not have been.

Metallica rocked the Roo...They came out and showed that they were loving being there...They gave plenty of Bonnaroo shout-outs and interactions with the crowd...With all of the responses before the show protesting Metallica being at Roo, they proved that they wanted to be there and that they wanted us to rock out with the classics...
I believe that if Kanye would have came out and just said ANYTHING to the fans...A "Bonnaroo" or "Thanks for staying" it would have been seen by the fans that he wanted to be there. I think he was just pissed at Pearl Jam and wanted to be a big baby. I bet that if Metallica had a problem with their visuals, that they would have came out on stage with no pyro or lights and rocked our faces off...
In the words of the great Robert Randolph, "Kanye SUCKS!"

here is my kanye rant
First of all, it is ridiculous that he made the entire festival cater to his needs by making multiple acts change their set times. Any artist that gets invited to bonnaroo would be honored to do so, and I don't think a single band would ever demand a time change, they would more than happy to take any time slot they are given. he fucked up the which stage for all of saturday, and Being the egotistical maniac he is, He made phil lesh stop playing an hour early, and waited to go onstage till everything near the what stage stopped playing.
like everyone said, he was 2 hours late, and never once apologized/said anything to the crowd
the 'amazing glow in the dark' crap was nothing but a video screen, and kanye dancing on a tilted disco floor
besides all of that, his music just sucked. it sounded like crap, he wasn't really that into it, and the whole concept behind it or whatever was dumb. the part of it I saw, he was talking to the computer of a spaceship about crash landing and flying to other planets.... WTF?
the worst part of this is, due to kanye, i'm betting that this is last mainstream/big name rap/hip hop artist bonnaroo will have in a very long time

Am I the only one that thinks we should be a little bit irritated with Superfly for just taking it up the ass from Kanye this whole time? I mean... the runners of the festival have the final say in whether Phil should stop playing, not Kanye. In my opinion, Superfly fucked up almost as much as Kanye did... I'm willing to bet Phil and the gang were quite insulted when they were actually asked to stop playing after being promoted as being a special late night performance on the Which Stage. Apparently, they were not as special as Kanye's late night performance in the eyes of Superfly

I heard from a friend that works for Superfly, that Kanye was PISSED he was on the smaller stage, while Jack Johnson got main stage. Kanye wouldn't settle for anything else. Makes sense to me, if you heard Chris Rock slamming him with the big ego comment.

Agreed. Bonnaroo has had legends play. i.e. Neil Young, Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, Willie Nelson, B.B. King, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, A.B.B., James Brown, Bob Dylan, Ornette Coleman, etc etc...

I realize that Pearl Jam played longer than they were supposed to, but that wouldn't have been a problem if Kayne hadn't changed his start time. His ego simply couldn't handle doing anything else than closing out the night. Plus, his ego couldn't handle having any other competition playing at the same time. That simply does not work in a festival format. You can't have the entire festival to yourself, it's Bonnaroo, not the Kayne West show.
He was a horrible pick from the beginning, he is a mediocre rapper to begin with, and he is a horrible pick for festivals in general- much less Bonnaroo. He can do his own thing on his own tour, but when he has to work with other people and fit in on a schedule with other performers his true colors are shown. I could see this coming the second I saw his name was on the lineup. When people talk about someone being a "bad fit for Bonnaroo," this epitomizes that phrase.
With everything said. I was pretty angry that Bonnaroo did not come out and give a statement. I still expect a statement on their website. They're responsible for every artist. Kanye undoubtedly fucked up, but Bonnaroo fucked up too and they should be way more professional
