I have seen them live twice and tried their other records, but until "Evil Urges" I thought they were so over-rated. But I LOVE the new album. I'm addicted. I am going to have to go back and try the other albums again. I'm starting to see why they get so much hype.

OK I know I'm coming late to the party with this, but I don't care. I downloaded this album a few days ago and love it. This is by far the best recording I have heard by this band. As much as I enjoy MMJ I don't really like them as much as everyone else I have met who knows them. This album makes me understand why people are so enamored by them. It has a lot more tempo changes than Z and It Still Moves. ISM is virtually all in the sam tempo and gets boring. Z is brilliant, but lacks contrast IMO. Evil Urges really has what it takes to make a classic album. This may be there masterpiece. Most bands only get one.

i never read this section of inforoo for some reason, so since i missed it last month, it's not too late to say:
Now that I've got to hear it more, worst album of theirs, by far... not necessarily a great band in the studio to begin with, this really just lacks anything that makes me take notice.
But the new songs sound good live, so that's ok I guess, lol.

I've gotta say, I think the album's pretty disappointing. I liked it OK on the first couple of listens and thought it would have the potential to grow on me but it's had the opposite effect...I haven't really felt the urge to listen to it much anymore. I feel like they've watered down the rocking aspect of past MMJ albums and missed the mark with the quieter, acoustic based numbers. They seem to have gone in the direction of Wordless Chorus, and while I love that song, I don't think it's the band's real strength. The album seems like a clear play for attaining a mass audience, which is definitely cool, good for them, but I just think something's been lost in the shuffle. And to those saying it's their best release, have you listened to like...any of their other material?
i think it's great walk down a different path! in some of the songs it sounds like they took a timbre style that was often found in 50's & 60's songs and applied a more current song structure with a mmj vibe. very cool in my book!

I don't agree with Pitchfork's review overall, but I do with some of the points made about the way the album was recorded. namely that JJ's vocals aren't as pronounced as in previous albums...still after seeing them live who cares?? how many poor albums did Phish put out, some bands are better live. The way the band described recording in the studio it wasn't a fun process, maybe the next time they'll be more comfortable or choose a different method...
I still love the album, first listen was more like first five listens... ;D
Funny....I think "I'm Amazed" is one of the most commercial songs off the new album...LOL!
I guess we truly DO all hear it differently! Which is awesome! Cause that means we can ALL have our faves! I think there's WAAAY too much reverb in some of the early recordings and like how pure JJ's vocals are on Evil Urges...plus how wildly eclectic the songs seem to be....rather than a theme album I think this one is a non-theme album....
