I want to know the 3 local bands from your town you think are the best so I can check um out. I'll start.
My Scene - Columbus OH
The Lindsay - www.myspace.com/thelindsay Good stuff, gets a lot of Sonic Youth comparisons, I love them, dueling vocals, acid rock jams, they WILL NOT be "local" in a few years if they stick together.
Times New Viking - www.myspace.com/timesnewviking Just signed to Matador. Reminds me of a better Moldy Peaches. The songs on myspace are all very low production quality FYI. Go see them live.
Megan Palmer - www.myspace.com/meganini Beatiful songwriter and very talented musician. If you are looking forward to Regina Specktor this year check her out. She is also a member of another great band that I know many on this board would like - www.myspace.com/thespikedrivers (those who like bluegrass and country or RR and the Family band)

I dont really catch local music, but melikecheese, did you ever catch The Shantee? They were sweet, too bad i got into them after they broke up, but i've caught Mike Perkins a few times, not as good solo though.
it was smokestack. but they are no more. hydrophonic is great. im seeing covert operations in a couple weeks. it will be my first show of theirs but i really like the shows i have heard on cd. is hookah still considered a local band?? it always amazes me when i meet so many people in my area (or anywhere) that dont know ekoostik hookah. but they are the shit!!
wow, i live in a pretty small town, comparitively speaking, but these are a few of my faves:
the haut chachis (ok, they're friends of mine, but i'm still allowed to plug 'em) have one of the most unique sounds i've ever been exposed to. mostly instrumental, they definately rock the house every time i see them. www.myspace.com/hautchachis
the butcher's hand: this is a band out of edmonton, but i used to live there, so i'll call them local. eroc has the most amazing stage presence i've ever seen, and is so quiet off stage that i didn't even realize i was talking to the same guy i'd just seen. caution: very heavy www.myspace.com/thebutchershand
and i must have a fourth (call it an honorable mention). methodical breed (also out of edmonton) won a huge battle of the bands last summer, beating out 200 bands of every genre from western canada. also very heavy. www.myspace.com/methodicalbreed

I will also testify to Ekoostik Hookah, great stuff...
I live in Austin. So it's kind of hard to know where to start. I mean, especially in the indie scene, it's really hard to separate the hype from reality. For instance, Spoon, What Made Milwaulkee Famous and Voxtrot are all bands I find exceedingly mediocre live. And yet, they all have huge ass followings, in and outside of Austin. So I'd guess I'll go with bands or acts you should catch live if you get the chance. Limiting it to 3 sort of eliminates a lot though...
David Garza- He's an underrated singer/songwriter whose highly influenced by Bowie/Bolan glam but adds a Tejano edge to it. Been around forever and almost broke through a couple times, but ended up moving back down to Austin and plays clubs for free during month long stretches about four times a year. www.davidgarza.com/

Alejandro Escovedo- Local legend and troubadour whose range is seemingly limitless. Like most Austin musicians, destined for respect but not success. www.alejandroescovedo.com/

Listened to a lot of Alejandro Escovedo, I really dig him...very moving stuff

I live in Memphis and we've got a ton of good local bands, so I'm not sure I can narrow it down to just three. Here's a few you might want to check out (but there's definitely lots of other really good bands here):
i live in richmond and the music scene here is pretty much all hardcore or emo ish garbage. I grew up in northern va and dc has a good jazz scene going.

very true. but i was in ohio for about 7 years. only been up here in the boonies for about a year and a half. even ohio can put out some good stuff every now and again. just not anything sports related ;D
