This Past Saturday(7/22) I went to see the Damien Rice/Fiona Apple Tour at Jones Beach. This is my 2nd time seeing both, but I was more excited to see Damien than Fiona and Damien didn't let down. He played a full hour set with mostly stuff off of "O" and some B-sides with a couple new songs. I have to say he is bringing a more heavier sound during this tour, which sounded great. I was in heaven when he played "The Professor" and did his usual jam of "I Remember".
About a half an hour after Damien left the stage Fiona took to the stage. Now, before I get into her, I saw her in "97" when she was just starting out and thought she was decent..nothing to go wow about really. The band that had opened for her (Hooverphonic) stole the show that evening.
No, getting back to Fiona, I was figuring that she would be alot more polished since the last time I saw her, man was I wrong! Fiona sounded awful! During the fast pace, her high notes sounded scratchy like a person who had skomed way too much. On top of that, she was doing this weird dance where she twirling the Mic like a little hunched back lady. I mean, it was so bad that when Fiona hit that first bad note, me and my gf( mind you she is the Fiona fan) gave each other a cringing look. After the third song my gf wanted to leave, but I said lets stick it out for a couple more and left we did after sitting through a flat version of a newer song and shadow-boxer.
Besides Fiona just not being able to sing, the band was even flat. After almost 10 years after seeing her the first time, I was just in shock just how a younger person can just regress. Anyways, that is my rant
Went to Guster and Ray Lamntane (SP) Came away really unimpressed. Ray was ok for the first few songs........seemed like the same song reworked 9 or 10 times. Guster was ok....but nothing to write home about.
Drive By Truckers/Robert Randolph & The Family Band/Black Crowes Saturday July 22, PNC Bank Arts Center, Holmdel NJ, 6th row center (upgraded from lawn when it turned into a pukey rainy day): Outstanding show, spent just about all of it on my feet. DBT came on at 6:30 and gave us 45 minutes of greasy southern rock, like only they do it. Sure wish they could have played longer, but they have this tight-arsed 11:00 curfew at the Arts Center due to the fact that it is not a very isolated location...anyway, RR was stupendous, total high energy, total tight funk, draw a line from Sly Stone through Prince and you get this band, all I can say is wow. They rocked our nuts off and we weren't the only ones.
Now, the headliners: Chris looked like he had gotten the party started long before he hit the stage. He was all squinty-eyed and loose-limber and totally, totally into the groove. The Crowes have been reborn as an Allmanesque jam band, most 'songs' were simply excuses to jam for anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes. Highlights were aplenty, including Rich taking a turn at the mic...the entire band was tight, special props to the drummer. Very very little chat from Chris other than to mention that they had a lot of new stuff to play...they mixed in some old stuff but not a lot, and they made it clear they were not here to perform a hits list, which I respected. They gave us two hours, a puny one-tune encore, then lights on! It's 11:00! Ya don't have to go home but y'all got to get on up outta here...
We tailgated before and after and that was cool even though the rains came (again) before the show...after the show, some dude backed up over a curb (walking, staggering, whatever) and banged his head off a tree. Fell in an unconscious heap. Cops came, his friends fled, finally EMT carted him off after getting him to stand up (was that a good idea?)...all in all a great night of nuts-rockin music, although I will say that after getting a taste of Arts Center prices I know understand what Bonnarroo means when they call their stuff reasonably priced. $5 bottle of soda anyone? $12.50 rum smoothie which delivered no buzz?
Anyway, they are still on the road, so go see 'em.

Dixie Chicks July 25 Wachovia Center, Philadelphia
Gorgeous day for tailgating, some annoying female singer (big hit: "Breathe") was the opener but then the Chicks came on and delivered a not overly long set, under two hours, lots and lots of high energy harmony and good old fashioned finger pickin on a variety of stringed instruments. Our seats were excellent (well, we sort of upgraded ourselves), and the musicianship was first rate.
I had not been to a Dixie Chicks show before but the new album is so good I had to take this opportunity. I was not disappointed. "White Trash Wedding" was a riot, and they do a very rocking take on Bob Dylan's "Mississippi".
All the hits were there, and drop dead perfectly done. They did not lean on the new record as much as I thought they would have and should have, but two days later I am still right there in my seat having a blast.

saw the motet at a small little laid back bar here in sd on tuesday night. man they were AMAZING! their music was so incredibly tight and dance worthy. and before/between/after sets they'd all just jump off the little stage and have beers or smokes and talk with the rest of us.
i was super bummed i missed them at roo since i got in a bit late. i imagine this crowd of <100 people was much smaller, but I'm sure they put on just as big a show
was very chill, and a beautiful experience. I'll definitely be checking them out any chance i get in the future

Will be sitting by my PC on Sat morning to by tix to Zappa Plays Zappa. The reviews are awesome. Steve Vai, etc. For all you FZ fans check it out.
Despite mixed reviews also looking forward to Guster on Tues. @ WolfTrap.
Anyone who missed Gomez at 'roo: they rocked the house.
Gomez will be in Austin, Atlanta and Nashville. They rocked Bonneroo. Check them out if you get the op. May go to Nashville or Hotlanta for them. The cd How We Operate is my current fav.
GOMEZ...
Thinking about Virgin Fest in B'more.
ps: Next year we are totally going VIP. Walk less, music more.
I saw Of Montreal in good ol' Lancaster this past Tuesday. It would've been a good show had the AC been on. It was seriously like 95 degrees in there, and no fans to move the air around. So you had to just stand there and stew in the stagnant air. I had to go downstairs, where the AC was on, just to cool off a couple of times. They played really well though. It also would have been nice if they had T-shirts larger than medium for sale. Not everyone is an insanely skinny, tight shirt wearing indie kid. Some of us like room in our T-shirts....ROOM I TELL YOU!!!

Lollapalooza Day One...
First off, thank god for Bonnaroo, because this fest has next to nothing when it comes to a "community"....basically a bunch girls in massive sunglasses walking around half naked....which is okay, but pretty much a joke...
anyways, i rolled in around 1:30 to catch the end of the Cursive set, not really impressed, so then decided to wander and get used to my surroundings....
2:30 came and I decided to see why people love Panic at the Disco, and I'm still clueless onto why people like them, they absolutely butchered "Karma Police", so with that being about all I could take, I bailed to go check out the Eels....not too bad at all, though I am not familiar with them at all.....watched a few songs, then went to check out Mute Math, pretty tight group of musicians, I'm kinda pissed I missed em at the Roo, but conflicts happen.....
4:00, i went on over to the AT&T stage to get a amazing spot for Umphreys, which I did, right on the railing on the front left side of the stage....these guys were by far the highlight of day one, they were playing to a hometown crowd, and it was perfect.....the set list was as follows: All in Time, Higgins, Dump City, Words, Believe the Lie, & Plunger.
5:30 brought on the Secret Machines, and I have been patiently waiting for this for months, and they most definitely did not disappoint, "Daddy's in the Doldrums" was my personal fav.......
i left there at 6:15 to make the massive fu_cking hike to the other end of grant park to see the boys in MMJ, the best part was everyone was going to check out The Raconteurs, so good spots for viewing were applenty....they opened with "At Dawn" and went right into a great "Off the Record".....this was truly a great show in the setting, the sun was going down through the city skyline, it was just perfect.....
7:30 I was off to see me some Violent Femmes, and as usual Chicago really loves these guys, and they sounded just as good as they did 10-12 years ago, they also brought out the Dresden Dolls to jam with them as well....pretty unique performance......
8:00 I made my way back across this damn park to see the end of the Sleater-Kinney set (3rd to last show ever), and really enjoyed what I heard, 8:30 Death Cab takes the stage, I hung out for about 30 minutes, then bailed....not that these guys are bad, but its just really hard to get into this stuff live sometimes (or all the time...lol)......i then contemplated going to check out some Ween, but I had about zero energy left.......Day two is gonna be a long one......
I just caught Beirut last night. A way too small venue was my only complaint. But they are quite the merry band of traveling minstrels. Definately check them out if you get a chance.
Saw Yonder Mountain String Band two weeks ago at Penn's Peak in Jim Thorpe, PA. The show was awesome. The venue was also just as awesome. I guess it's a converted barn, the entire thing is made of wood and sits on top of a mountain with a 55 mile panoramic view. Yonder loved it as well, they said something between songs about coming back for an entire weekend. Also commented on how this was the first time they have ever had a lot scene at one of their shows which was quite funny. Such a great time. I recommend seeing a show there if you have a chance.
Saw RJD2 for free at Waterloo park in Austin. It's part of a series of free concerts called Fuzion cause it combines DJs spinning with VJs projecting video shows on two massive screens on each side of the dj. I missed the first in the series (Cut Chemist), but RJD2 was pretty damn good. DJ Spooky plays the 29th. Best concert idea to hit Austin in awhile. Anyone who lives in the area should check the next one out.
M. Ward just completely blew me away. I've probably said this about two dozen times in my life, but: It was one of the best shows I've ever seen. That guy is amazing.
Chinese Translation made me cry.
Here is the super cool video for that song:
Here is the super cool M. Ward playing it for David Letterman:
Man, how have I missed this guy? I watched your links....they were awesome. I hope he comes near or to Knoxville sometime in the future. I can't imagine what he is like in concert.

Saw Rancid last night. The crowd was a little rowdy, but I completly loved it! I saw them once in 2000 when I was 16 and again last night, and I couldn't belive how much they have improved their live shows!
I still say that Damien Marley/Ben Harper takes the cake for my absolute favorite performer this year. Ben came back for TWO encores, and was so thankful to the audience and fans, his guitar playing was amazing as well as his vocals. I have ever MORE respect for this man than I already did after seeing him live. I really hope he comes back to Bonnaroo next year.
Here's a short clip of him doing a cover of Neil Youngs "heart of gold" although this video doesn't really do him justice (crappy audio)
All I can say is that my life is pretty plain I like watchin' the puddles gather rain And all I can do is just pour some tea for two And speak my point of view But it's not sane, It's not sane
I just want some one to say to me I'll always be there when you wake
I saw Nickel Creek and the Mammals at the Ryman last night. Bela Fleck sat in on a few songs, and Chris Thile tore down some Back. It was completely euphoric.

I went and seen The Mars Volta at the Eagles Ballroom in Milwaulkee, and I gotta say it was one of the greatest show I've ever seen. New drummer Blake is very tight, he's no Jon Theodore, but he is really, really good. And Juan on bass was like witnessing a totally different bassist, I think the new material has relly increassed his role in this band. Anyways, they opened the show with "Interstellar Overdrive" (early Pink Floyd) and jammed that for like 15mins, I thought my head was gonna explode! Then they proceeded to melt my face off with some of the newer tracks....they played a new song called "rapid fire tollbooth" which was absolutely amazing, such a killer riff there, if you can find this for download, LET ME KNOW! Highlights were: Interstellar, Tetragrammaton, tollbooth and Roulette Dares. I gotta say this show was prolly the closest I'll ever be to trippin with out any drugs. Never, Ever miss a chance to see this band, doing so will result in 24 hours being subtracted off of your life.
Caught Tool last night at the Tweeter in Camden. Got there early and got on the front of the lawn. Boy howdy was that a good decision. Tool's new light show may be the best light show around. It was craziness. Lazers, smoke, and the stage was white so they could use it as a screen. The music wasn't bad either. It's been 5 years since I saw them last and I really hope it's not another 5 until the next time.
Saw Umphrey's at the State Theater in Ithaca NY on Thursday. Awesome show but different than usual. I'm not sure if it was the small crowd or what but the crowd never really seemed to get into it as much as usual. First set was kinda weak I though at first but then they ended by breaking out the acoustic guitars for a couple of songs and that was amazing. First time in the 11 shows I've been to that I've gotten to see some acoustic Umphrey's so that was cool. The first 40 minutes of the second set could be my favorite 40 minutes of music ever. Just awesome songs played extremely well with some sick jamming. Set kind of slowed down after that. They brought they acoustics out for a Night Moves encore which was fun. All in all it was a different sort of show but really good none the less. I think I'm gonna head up to Albany Monday for another show. One just wasn't enough!
Went to The Egg in Albany NY last night for Umphrey's. First of all what a cool venue that place is. Amazing sound inside. The show was outstanding. Some nasty jams in the first set and then a first time Marvin Gaye cover with guest vocalist. Then Vinnie from moe. sat in on percussion for a jam and then right into a new Pink Floyd cover of Wish You Were Here. Second set started out strong and then they busted into a Norwegian Wood Techno jam that was just insane. I've heard them jam on Norwegian Wood many times but this was off the hook. Then the best way I've ever seen them end a set. A monseter DBK, which is a song I've been chasing for the 12 shows I've been to so last night was very gratifying. They sandwhiched another great tune and a "I heard it through the Grapevine" jam/tease and then back into DBK to close. All in all it was a fantastic show. I highly recommend anyone see them on this Fall tour if they can. They have been playing with Songlists instead of Setlists, which means they make a list of songs to play that night but don't put them in any order. It makes for some interesting setlists and great jamming.
