Back to Terrapin Crossroads (Phil Lesh's club) Friday night for another one of Phil's Rambles:
Phil Lesh - bass Neal Casal - guitar John Kadlecik - guitar, fiddle Adam MacDougall - keys Joe Russo - drums Stanley Jordan - guitar
First time seeing Stanley Jordan, who's amazing. He cut loose and then the others loosened up and big smiles all around.

This has nothing to do with any shows, I just noticed Neal Casal listed above and wanted to say that he is fantastic on the new Chris Robinson Brotherhood album. That whole album has a nice jammy, easy feelin' groove to it.
Went to HARD Toronto last night at Fort York with a line-up of Austra, M83, Justice. Overall this was a great show.
Some negatives: It rained pretty hard a few times and this was an outdoor venue near the lake, so being soaked and chilly was not pleasant at times. Also, the first and heaviest downpour delayed M83 by about 20 minutes and due to curfew they didn't get this time back.
Positives: All three acts were great in the time that they got. Having a sold out Black Keys/Shins show and the VELD music festival happening on the same day made for a smaller crowd and plenty of room to move around. M83 mostly chose to match Justice by sticking to electro jams like Coluers. Dancing in the rain, in the glow of strobe lights, to a solid Justice set, made for a memorable end to the evening.
I have recently found myself in a pretty incredible lucky hot streak and have managed to win tickets to an event 3 weeks in a row.
First I won 4 tickets to see the Wiggles on their farewell tour. Laugh if you must, but I got to take my 2 year old daughter and had a great time.
Next I won a pair of tix to see Band of Skulls. They blew my mind. Gritty rock 'n roll at it's finest.
Just yesterday I got an email that I won tix to see Jackson Browne with Sara Watkins. I have to be honest that I'm not really familiar with his catalog. Does anyone have any suggestions where to start?

We saw Band of Skulls last night. Awesome show, and yeah, definitely "gritty rock'n'roll at it's finest."
But the best part: we got to hang out with them for about an hour after the show. Wow, what great, funny, and warm folks they are! They just came out to the crowd and never left! LOL. I mean alot of bands have come out after performances to kinda go through the motions and make nice with the fans but these three were really chatty and giving out hugs to us sweaty drunk people like crazy.
The topic of their 2011 Bonnaroo appearance came up and Emma really lit up (they had been talking about their most recent shows, like Lollapalooza for example). She said they had wished to get to play Bonnaroo again. She called it the most amazing time. Described their show as "scary" cause they weren't expecting such a large crowd and they had alot of new material to perform and then "15,000 people crammed into a tent and we were all up on stage pretty much asking ourselves how to pull this off" and she described the crowd as these "hot, quacked out of their minds lunatics" and "it was great." She said they'd love to do that again, lol.
So, I just thought I'd share the conversation with you guys. I laughed so hard when Emma lovingly called the Roo crowd these "hot, quacked out of their minds lunatics"

Between Lollapalooza and their show in Seattle earlier this week, I saw Sigur Ros play for three hours in four days. Words cannot do it justice. Please, please, please let there be a southeastern leg of this tour.
I saw M.Ward last week @ Prospect Park. It was a last minute plan that someone gave me a ticket. Great show. I had low expectations going in thinking the show was going to be slow.

Caught the EPIC Springsteen show in Boston Saturday night. Still coming to grips with just how awesome it was, or lucky I am to have witnessed it. I really wish he would have pulled out a setlist like this on the farm.

I thought I was going to have to be carried out when he played Jungleland.
Only the second time he's played it this tour, and other than the first time I heard him play it live, the best version I've ever heard. That rendition of Racing in the Streets was incredible!

Sweet. I was there, too. My ears are jacked as well.
I just read your great review. Looks like you had a much bigger night than I did. I work early in the early in the morning, so I took a nap at the house from 9:00-11:45, missed all of the opening acts, saw Ghetto Cross, and was in bed by 1:30.
You are so right about the community, though. I feel like when Deerhunter or Black Lips (or in this case Ghetto Cross) ever actually play a show in Atlanta, it really is a big deal for the music scene. All of the familiar faces, sense of comradery and support for those 2 bands make it really special. Since 2005, there is only 1 show for each of them that I've missed (that I can think of). And I swear, I think it gets better and better.
Oh nice! We were the couple that was standing awkwardly alone at the front for a while there, if you got there early. Jenna was in a Transformers tee. I was wondering if you were going to be there. How awesome were they?

I saw a dude thats looks like you (judging from your avatar) with a girl towards the front left and wondered if that was you. I didn't see what shirt she was wearing, but she was fairly short.

They were pretty awesome. I think they are such a funny combo. Goofy, free wheelin Cole with the tight monsterous riffing of Bradford. I really like it when they pair up.
Haha yep that sounds like us. I just saw your edit, and I am PAYING for that bigger night today. So exhausted. It was worth it though, I feel like it was a little piece of history. I can't wait for the album.
-When I Hear My Name -Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground -Blue Orchid -Passive Manipulation -Red Rain -Death Letter -My Doorbell -Hotel Yorba -Same Boy You've Always Known -Lovesick -Little Ghost -We're Going to Be Friends -The Hardest Button to Button -Black Math -The Nurse -I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself
Encore: -Ball and Biscuit -Seven Nation Army -Screwdriver
That My Morning Jacket show was actually one of the best I've seen since MSG NYE'10 - and people are totally sleeping on Shabazz Palaces (maybe it was the crowd though - you would think it would be more diverse in Williamsburg... but maybe the cost of the show vs. intended crowd focus didn't work out). It would have been even better if Doodlebug was with them for vocals, but I was happily surprised with how much complicated stuff the duo still gets in.
Also I will never ever ever understand how people leave an afternoon/non-LN show before the end. People were dispersing at the end of MMJ - they were doing a Prince cover!?! how dare you leave bro.
