I went to Volapalooza last night. It was billed as: "Doors at 6, Music at 7. Ziggy Marley, Three 6 Mafia, Big Gigantic, The Black Cadillacs, and DJ Hailstorm." with some posters around campus listing Three 6 Mafia above Ziggy Marley. What time do you think Three 6 would come on stage?
You are wrong.
Don't get me wrong, I was excited about Ziggy- I've seen the Wailers twice but never a Marley- and Big Giantic, but I've been listening to 3 6 since I was like 13, which was just over a decade ago!! And to see them in Knoxville.... in their home state!?! I was so pumped.
I figured they'd come on a little after 9, so we left my place from pregaming to walk down to Thompson Boling Arena at like 8:15. Well apparently DJ Hailstorm was just doing music between the sets and apparently Big Gigantic is more popular than 3 6 because we walked in to 3 6 playing. We saw like 5 songs. I was so pissed at both UT and myself!!!
A lot of the crown left after 3 6 and even more after Big G. In my opinion, Big G, whom I was excited to see, sounded pretty generic. The energy was pretty good, but I wasn't really that impressed. And I was second row. However, 3 6 (or what I saw) was really good, and Ziggy straight killed it. I was front row for all of Ziggy. On the quacking rail. My friend, who is a metal-head and used to be the lead singer of a metal band, was on the rail with me and we went nuts.
Moral of the story, if you go to UT then you should be prepared for the Big Orange Screw to get you at any time. ANY TIME! Especially when you're least expecting it.
Other moral- when Ziggy looks at you and asks what's in your head, if you scream "REGGAE" as loud as you can, he will wink at you. So there's that.
Pics weren't allowed all show, but I got a few on my phone:

Also that same metal-head friend of mine saw Rammstein in ATL last Monday. He and his friend were second row. I couldn't afford it or find the time, but I'm jealous. He said it was the best show he's ever seen. And he's been to a LOT of metal shows. Just thought I'd share.

^I was there last night. First off, I agree that (as a former UT student) the school needs to communicate more effectively when exactly the shows are happening. I disagree a bit about Big Gigantic; I thought they sounded pretty good, and it was a good appetizer for 'Roo. I completely agree about Ziggy; too many people bailed after Big G. The school needs to make the "headliner" the actual headliner.
Overall, $5 well spent. I'm not enrolled any more, but I still have a passable student ID.
EDIT: What I meant about Ziggy. Past shows like this have ended around 11 or so. Big G didn't even leave the stage until 10:30. Don't open the doors at 6 and have the headiner on 5 hours later.
I saw The Lumineers at The Basement in Nashville, last night. It was crowded and hot (normal) but a great show. For a group whose first album has only been out three weeks, they had the crowd singing along with every song. They are a group I can see getting a log bigger.
I got to see Iron And Wine at the Alabama Theater last Thursday. I had seen him at Bonnaroo a few years back, but I didn't pay too much attention. The theater environment was much better. His voice is unreal and the band was pretty tight. The show was really good. Perhaps a bit short (1 hour 20 minutes), but still really good.

I went to the Feist show in Asheville and it was so good. She was awesome! She even saw me with my camera and grabbed it and started filming the crowd and everything on stage with it! Totally couldn't stop grinning after that. The opener, Timber Timbre was okay. They sounded good, but the show itself was kind of meh.
The Beach Boys was a TON OF FUN on Wed. at The Amphitheater. The show far exceeded my expectations. I was going for the nostalgia of it all, but it really blew me away.

Passion pit was terrible last night He doesn't even bother to try to hit the notes he sings on the album. It sounds like he's bored with all the songs and just sings them however he feels like. I'm all for some vocal improvisation if it's well done but it was pretty godawful. No bueno.
Megadeth were great in Biloxi thursday night, but they only played an hour and a half. When I pay $60 for a gotdamn ticket, I expect at least a 2-3 hour show. Glad I finally saw them even though Marty Friedman is no longer with them.
Primus show saturday night was the best Primus show that I have ever seen (that was #7 for me). It brings great pain to me to say that because the show in 2004 was one of the most incredible shows that I have ever seen (Tim Alexander was on drums and their second set was Sailing the Seas of Cheese in it's entirety). Primus are at the top of their game right now. Their set was incredible because for nearly every song they played, they added additional sequences to each song, but not in that annoying noodling jamband kinda of way. Larry LaLonde is probably the most unappreciated guitar player in history. I mean, here's the setlist:
Tommy the Cat Eyes of the Squirrel Groundhog's Day Those Damned Blue-Collar Tweekers Fisticuffs Eternal Consumption Engine Mr. Krinkle Jilly's on Smack Over the Falls Lee Van Cleef Southbound Pachyderm Wynona's Big Brown Beaver Harold of the Rocks
Encore: Fish On Jerry Was a Race Car Driver
Normally, Primus could plow through those 15 songs in about an hour and half, but they were playing for 2 hours and 15 minutes. It was incredible.
Unfortunately Tony Clifton didn't have his full band with him like he did for the late night show at hangout fest last year, he just came out and did a couple of songs with the Dead Kenny G's. The Budos Brothers were great...decided to hit Frenchmen for food and Gravity A instead of seeing their afterparty show at the Republic.

I was there too! That was so cool that it was your camera. My only complaint is that she couldn't pick whether she wanted the show to have an intimate feel or the grand, orchestral feel of most of the shows on this tour. Her Coachella show (with string and horn sections) was a little better because she played it pretty much in the latter style, but she's so charming. She kills it every time.
We saw Balam Acab and Active Child last night. We went for Balam Acab and he was incredible. His sound was immense and beautiful, and at times very intense. Active Child was really good too, but Balam Acab was the show stealer. It seemed more people were there for his opening slot than Active Child's set.

Aside from Spiritualized just blowing my mind last night, we saw Mayer Hawthorne & The Stepkids on Friday. Everybody knows Mayer delivers a great performance. It was a blast, he covered Hall & Oates, dancing ensued. The real story, however, was how impressive The Stepkids were. They absolutely SHRED. I was completely floored. I would go see them again in a heartbeat.
Saw Sleigh Bells at House of Blues in AC the other day. I thought they were awesome, wasn't a packed show or anything. Alexis was the shit!! She got yanked off the stage, by some asshole, but still was singing, and ended up crowd surfing after it. Got to get real close to the stage, and damn is Alexis fucking hot. All i have to say is... DAT ASS!

In the past few months: Gogol Bordello (Terminal 5, NYC) The Devil Makes Three, (at 3rd & Lindsley) J. Roddy Walston & The Business, (the Exit/In) Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk, (the Exit/In) The Naked and Famous, (Cannery Ballroom, w/my homegirl Abra!) Dieselboy (Gilligan's) The Melvins, (the Exit/In) The Langoliers, (private party)
Last night Wilco in St Augustine. Blew me away. They were just so damn good. At one point, the power went out, and it went pitch black. The drummer never stopped going, the power came up, in sections, and as it did, the band picked up on the beat. They kept playing and never missed a beat - literally.
I still have California Stars ringing in my head. I was going to skip Wilco for Umphrey's tomorrow on the beach, but I don't think I can do that now.
saw Kurt Vile tonight in Lancaster, played an awesome set and got a setlist and he signed it ;D Black Bananas and True Widow opened, great show for 11 dollars
jack white was amazing last night. it was the all girl band and they were kicking ass? meg who? his new drummer is so much better than meg, it's not even funny. i think ball and biscuit is better with this band that it was with white stripes.

As I've mentioned before, Phil Lesh bought a club near here in San Rafael. He's been playing there a lot with different musicians. Sometimes he even plays in the bar for free. Last night I saw him with John Kadlicek and Mark Karan (alumni of various Dead-related projects) on guitar and Jon Graboff (who played for years with Ryan Adams) on pedal steel, and others. They opened with Shakedown Street and played two amazing sets that included covers of Miles Davis (So What), Ralph Stanley (Man of Constant Sorrow), The Beatles (Strawberry Fields), Marvin Gaye (How Sweet It Is), and a traditional blues song (Death Don't Have No Mercy). Damn they were good!
