I went out last night and saw a local psych rock band called The Laurels; I'd seen them 18 months ago opening for Jagwar Ma and they were good, and it was free, so I figured why not. It was their first show with their new drummer, and they were debuting some new material and filming a documentary on it.
Hoooollly crap, this band has stepped their game up fivefold since that Jagwar Ma show. Expect them to make a big splash on the US festival circuit in a year or two. If I had to put a label on it, I'd call it shoegaze-punk; think Happy Mondays meets Sonic Youth, as seen through the veil of the current Aussie psych rock scene. (Day Ravies opened BTW, and they were pretty solid too).

Here's the only video I could find of the Parquet Courts show I went to last night:
I can't find the set list online but it was good. I remember hearing "Bodies Made Of", "You've Got Me Wonderin' Now", and "Instant Disassembly" -- unfortunately no "Stoned and Starving" (although I kinda was).

Wanted to check this one out. But I am in Roanoke, VI right now glad it was a good show. Maybe next time.

It was definitely a great time. That was the most crowded I've ever seen The Mothlight, the show sold out. There was a mini-mosh pit in the front-center of the crowd.
thursday was obviously better, as it was at a tiny venue, I was maybe 5 feet away from them, and I got the setlist.
last night was a blast (aside from the 2 suuuuuper drunk people near me that I had to deal with) and I think their energy was even greater last night. I'm still bitter I didn't hear heavy light last night with that big crowd. whatevs, they played it thursday and it was the highlight of my week.

When I was down in mexico the wife and I ran into Scott mcmicken from Dr. Dog at the resort gaping at some iguanas sunning themselves. It's was pretty funny, he seemed fascinated, was wearing the same clothes from the show the night before, and seemed aittle drunk.

Saw The New Mastersounds at the Hard Rock. It was maybe the strangest crowd I've ever been in. Not in a bad way. Just an odd cross-section of people. Regardless, it was a fantastic show. They are amazing.
The opener was good, too. It was a local band called Moksha. I varied on how much I liked their songs (from a little to a lot), but they were quite talented.

Recently saw Sylvan Esso in Charlotte and The Infamous Stringdusters in Boone. Sylvan's going to put on one hell of a show at Roo this year, their live energy is unbelievable and their performance was awesome.

Seen a steller UM show last night. Pay The Snucka was pretty cool to see, they didn't play at it Lockn. Really like the venue it was in (Jefferson Theater at UVA).
First time for me to see a show at Vulcan Gas Company. It's right in the heart of 6th Street, and actually a pretty cool venue. Capacity of around 600, with an upper balcony viewing area. Pretty decent audio too, which is always a treat. Plus 5 hi-def projectors for visuals on the walls/floor during the show. Venue can (probably) only accommodate DJ acts though, don't think there's quite enough room for a full size stage.
Soundfounder started out the night spinning some vinyl for us for an hour and half. Digging through his crates, he expertly mixed hip hop, funk, and electronic into an enjoyable set. Definitely got the crowd ready for Animal Collective to take the stage.
Avey Tare, Deakin, and Geologist eventually make it to the stage just after midnight. Instead of spinning actual vinyl, the AnCo boys are going the digital route. They all have tablets, using some sort of turntable app to mix everything together. They played a varied set of music, not even sure what genres it spanned. Wasn't really anything I recognized (except one Panda Bear song), but I thoroughly enjoyed everything I heard. Some pretty abstract stuff, but still with a head bobbing beat.
It was fun watching Deakin have such a good time on stage. He really does have an infectious smile, you can't help but be happy when you watch him dance about. You can see he's doing exactly what he always wanted to.
I finally had to leave around 1:30 (fucking work), so no idea how long they actually played.
I'll always see AnCo in any form I can, they are one of my all time favorites and hold a special place in my heart/mind!
I made a last-minute decision to buy a secondhand ticket to Spoon last night. I've only ever listened to a few things here and there, but something in my gut told me I'd really regret skipping this one. Call it concertgoer's intuition, call it FOMO... whatever it was, it served me brilliantly yesterday (Deep Sea Arcade were a great opener, too).
Saw Father John Misty last night it was fucking awesome. Then went to grab a bite to eat and heard Prince was playing over on Wall Street. Went down there and the line was already insane. Waited for an hour and then it became clear it wasn't happening for us so headed home. Fun night regardless.

I saw The Districts last night at a small venue I had never been to called Club Cafe. I had such a good time. It was a date night for my girl and I. Before the show we ate at Hofbräuhaus (I had never eaten there before) and it ruled. Club Cafe was a great small venue. Good drinks for good prices. The opening act was a local Pittsburgh group called Coronado. They were pretty bluesy and awesome. The Pine Barons played in the middle. They were pretty good as well. Not my favorite but still a great show. The Districts straight murdered their set. I was like 3 feet away. It was such a good show. My girlfriend loved it as well.

Seeing Father John Misty in March at 9:30 Club in D.C. Can't wait.

I'm really jealous of you guys. I really want to catch this tour but I won't be able to. Any chance of him playing any fests east coast other than hangout?
Tonight was one for the all-time greatest list. Three sets, three hours, three feet from the rail, three points in our bizarre love triangle.
Drawback was replaced with She's Lost Control, which I am so much more grateful for knowing it was unplanned. I've already explained that song's significance in the 'songs that make you cry' thread, and you best believe I was weepin' and dancin' my ass off out there. He saw me getting into it and we locked eyes, and I gave him a gangsta upwards head nod and a smile; he returned the favour, as if to say "I'm a musician named Peter, you're a musician named Peter... let's do this thing". We're now officially homies.

My lovely bride, to put it mildly, loathes Gov't Mule and many of my other favorite bands. But we have mutual friends who enjoy live music and I dragged them along to see the Mule and John Scofield last weekend in Oakland. As I've mentioned before, I have a connection that can get me backstage for Gov't Mule shows. (I posted a photo some time ago of me and Warren.) Anyway, I was able to take some friends backstage after the show last weekend. You never know for sure how your friends will behave in that situation. Although, in retrospect, I should have had a pretty good idea.
You'll have to give me a show report from Helmet tonight. I read where this tour is a split set of Helmet other stuff and a full performance of Betty. That should be outstanding, and yeah I probably should have gone ahead and bought a ticket in advance.
You should have. I saw Helmet sunday night here in Mobile and they were fucking awesome. Betty all the way through, then about 8 songs of stuff from other albums, then they took a couple of requests (one was FBLA, but I forgot the other), another couple of songs, left stage, came back and encored Just Another Victim and In the Meantime.
