Saw Johnny Marr last night. He brought it and them some. Seeing everyone's faces when he'd play a Smiths song brought a lot of joy to my dreary day, I would not recommend passing him up if he comes anywhere near you, soooo good, hope he's at Roo.
I too was at that Deerhunter show in Athens. Too bad I missed running into you guys.
Onto last night. Seeing Dave Rawlings Machine with John Paul Jones playing Going to California was the first time I ever broke down and started crying at a show.
So, Leonard Cohen tonight... hooooooly shiz. He came on at 8pm and, with a 20-minute setbreak, played 'til 11:30 (half an hour past curfew ). There was not a single moment in those 3+ hours and three encores I wasn't completely rapt. That's pretty astounding for anyone, but for a guy pushing 80? Daaaaamn.
Jeff Opt in Dayton Ohio, has many connections to local artists in the area, had an idea to recreate The Last Waltz. It just happened to be his favorite concert of all time. He wanted to to not just recreate the show but also the "spirit" of the event. He started talking to several artists and they liked the idea. Friends shared the vision with friends and it evolved into a benefit for WYSO Public Radio out of Yellow Springs Ohio. Jeff did a great job bringing people together to pull off this show. It was a lot of fun, thankful to him for giving me the opportunity to help document the evening.
1st night of Anders Osborne chrimus show was fantastic. Round 2 tonight. They are streaming these shows online live too. Check his fb for links if interested.
Monday night... John Mayer comes home to CT to play the city he was born in. My 4th show this year and 13th all time. I was told by a reliable source that his management has been looking for a small bar somewhere in town for him to play Sunday night. Looks like I'm going to every bar in CT

Saw my first !!! show last night, and as expected it was an all out dance party! Nic is easily one of the best front men in music today, he controls the crowd from the second he walks on stage. Vacationer (live band) was the opener and they had a really nice set. I think they would be a perfect fit for early Thursday at Roo

Vacationer played a DJ set at Roo last year in the Silent Disco, I think. I remember because he actually came and posted here a couple times.

Yup, had 2 sets I think but both were during the day with tons of conflicts.
Day One of the Doomtree Blowout IX did not disappoint. Someone knocked my glasses off my face about three songs in. Figured they were lost forever. A few seconds later, my concert neighbor Sarah hands them to me. Instant friend. Thank you also to Kim & Amber: Amber, you were an intriguing woman; Kim you were more direct. I have not known dirty dancing like that for a while. James, you are pretty dope for other reasons. Can't wait to see you all tomorrow for Day Two.
I saw Lucius last night at The Southern in Charlottesville, and they absolutely made it worth driving 1 hour through snow. It was a perfect mix of energy, crowd participation, instrumentation, and killer vocals. They have a magnetic stage presence, and I will be going back to see them the next time they are anywhere close. 10/10, would see again.
Got to see Railroad Earth last night. They put on a great show, and a pretty long one for a Tuesday night. Was a lot of fun and highly recommended if bluegrass is your thing.
Sooooo much ridiculously good music this weekend. Yesterday was easily the best day of live music I've seen since Friday at Bonnaroo 2012. My day went: Toro y Moi > The Naked & Famous > Tame Impala > Cosmic Psychos > The Hives > Beady Eye > Arcade Fire > Pearl Jam. All of them were full shows, and all of them were nothing short of awesome.
The biggest non-headliner standout was (no surprise) Tame Impala. Holy hell. For a band that's only recently started playing to large crowds, they sure know how to work one like old pros. I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if they're headlining major festivals in 5 or 6 years' time.
Speaking of headliners, Arcade Fire For The Win, Butler. Their new material smokes live. They opened with a tease of Blur's Song 2, which was a nice homage after they'd bailed. I always have a lot of respect for any band that plays their biggest hit early in the set, and Wake Up came in at a healthy #3. Pretty bold move, but they have the catalogue and the chops to pull it off at this point.
And Pearl Jam... holy fuck, Pearl Jam. There's no way that's not one of my top shows of the year. Could very well be *the* show of the year already, and I'm saying that with a Stones concert coming up. The only other time I've seen them was at Bonnaroo '08 - and if I'm being totally honest, it tops even that. 2 hours 45 min. from third row stage right, and not a boring moment all night. Eddie was so funny, and charming... and drunk. He admitted to drinking a bunch of beer with the Cosmic Psychos earlier, but promised he wouldn't drink any more beer, because he was onto wine now. Made his way through a couple bottles of red through the show. But he still brought his A-game, and thankfully is a happy, loving drunk - which is good, since he had a ton of love to give the crowd.
Do the Evolution Mind Your Manners Animal Hail Hail Getaway Corduroy Lightning Bolt In Hiding Even Flow Severed Hand Sirens State of Love and Trust Unthought Known Insignificance Let the Records Play Spin the Black Circle Rearviewmirror
Encore: Footsteps Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town Chloe Dancer (Mother Love Bone cover) Crown of Thorns (Mother Love Bone cover) Throw Your Arms Around Me (Hunters & Collectors cover) (Eddie Vedder solo) Better Man Porch
Encore 2: Jeremy Black Alive Kick Out the Jams (MC5 cover) (with Mark Arm and Steve Turner of Mudhoney) Rockin' in the Free World (Neil Young cover)
As far as non-headliners go, Cosmic Psychos were a bunch of psychos. Gave us a classy mooning at the end of the set. I'd kind of dismissed The Hives as an early 2000s flavour of the month, but damn, they can rock a crowd. Beady Eye stuck to mostly newer stuff, with just two classic Oasis tracks (Rock 'n' Roll Star & What's the Story Morning Glory?) - but it was a fun set and it all flowed together nicely. Oh, and I also saw Snoop Dogglion's sideshow on Saturday night. Very fun show, about what you'd expect. Couldn't believe people were lighting up left and right in that theatre.
So yeah, I have a feeling January will be heavily represented in my year-end best shows list.
Saw Philip H Anselmo and the Illegals last nite. It was a great show...Phil never lets down. The closer for the encore was Pantera's A New Level, which was incredible...the guitarist did a pretty good job with the solo, but it was def not Dimebag. Also, picked up a poster and a new vinyl at the show.
While Phil and the Illegals were great, one of the openers, Author and Punisher, stole the show! Author and Punisher is a one man "electronic" show, and he built his machine/instrument by himself. I could easily see him playing at MOEMS, in the venue that Raimi played (forgot the name of the venue). Def looking forward to seeing him sometime in the future
Saw Darkside last night with jigawig. AMAZING show, absolutely fantastic. Can't wait to see them again already!
Set list:
Freak, Go Home Paper Trails The Only Shrine I've Seen Metatron Golden Arrow (encore)
There might have been something from the EP thrown in there around Metatron, but it could have just been some jamming too. Really enjoyed the material live, they let the songs breathe and just jammed on some of the songs for a while.
The light show was spot on for the show imo, simple, yet effective. They brought out a little razzle dazzle for the end though. They had a round mirror hanging behind them that would rotate wile a light from front of house was shining on it. It's hard to explain, but with the smoke, it looked like you were staring down this vortex of clouds looking at the moon. Check my sig for a quick video I shot of it.

Was able to catch Lotus for the first time last night in Pittsburgh. Very fun time, very good setlist. "The Surf" live is one of the funnest live songs ever and they encored Umbilical Moonrise which was what I was hoping for.
While at the show I was also able to score a ticket to moe. next Wednesday for only 15 bucks, so overall really good night.
Russian Circles / KEN Mode / Inter Arma 2/7/14 - Austin, TX - Red 7
This show kicked so much ass. I can feel that my neck's a little sore this afternoon from all the headbanging last night! Maybe that means I need to headbang more often to build those muscles up...
I was late leaving work, and parking in downtown was a bitch, so I arrived 5 minutes into Inter Arma's set. As I walked in, I could hear the tidal wave of doom approaching me. Once inside, I was victim to Inter Arma's full onslaught.
First impressions, these guys are a lot younger then I thought they'd be. For some reason I pictured them a lot older. The lead singer looked like he was in his early to mid 20's. These guys brought the fucking hammer down though. They were tight as a group, and the singer had a great energy about him. I really enjoy their blend of doom and black metal with a few psychedelic twists. They closed the set with a massively crushing rendition of "Survival Fires".
I've never actually listened to KEN Mode before, so was unsure what to expect. They introduced themselves as KEN Mode from Winnipeg, Canada, and then proceeded to rip into a high energy set. For just the 3 of them, they sure to produce a lot of sound. I really enjoyed their set, and will definitely catch them again whenever they're in town. The singer's manic energy was contagious.
What really cracked me up, was during one of their songs, they have lyrics to the effect of, "How you doing? Nice to meet you!" But of course they're screamed in a hardcore style. Those Canadians, even their metal can have some politeness sprinkled about.
At one point in the set, the singer locked eyes with me for a solid 7-8 seconds. During that time, he never blinked, just stared wide eyed at me all the while mouthing things that I interpreted to be "Fuck you, kill yourself". All I could do in response was stare back while headbanging the best I could. It was intense, and definitely a little strange, but it certainly matched the energy of their set! That song seemed to be about a schizophrenic person absolutely losing their shit though, so I was ok with it
Russian Circles were up next, and the crowd was ready for them. They took the stage and ran through a nice selection of their material, from old to new. Crowd was super into it, at one point during "Deficit", when that killer riff kicks in towards the end, nearly the entire crowd was headbanging in unison. It was a great sight to see They closed the set with an encore of "Carpe". Was hoping to hear "Death Rides a Horse", but no such luck. Great show for sure.
Really the only semi-negative thing about the show was the crowd during Inter Arma and KEN Mode. You could tell nearly everyone there was there to only really see Russian Circles. For whatever reason, the crowd was not into Inter Arma at all. No one was rude or anything, and they'd give a polite applause after songs, but during the songs, everyone just stood there like lifeless zombies. Looking around, I saw only a couple dozen others who were digging Inter Arma like I was. The crowd warmed up to KEN Mode a little more, but nothing great still. They were all about Russian Circles, and rightfully so. My guess is that since most were there for Russian Circles (an instrumental band), the extremely harsh vocals of Inter Arma turned them off.
After Inter Arma was done breaking down their equipment, I saw the drummer walking around the venue. Didn't want to bother him, but just got his attention and gave him the devil horns. He just smiled back, flashed them too, and continued on his way.

Went and saw Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings last week at the Orange Peel... As expected, amazing show...
What I wasn't expecting was the opening act... Valerie June. This young lady (along with her band) was amazing. Her voice was hard to get used to, but her music was on point. I think she's from Tennessee (so many of you might already know of her)... Even though it looks like her schedule won't allow for an appearance at Roo, give her a listen ya'll... pretty good.

If Darkside is coming near you, don't miss them!
I saw them a couple of weeks prior to your show. agreeeeed about the giant mirror. also the guitarist's hair created the perfect amount of dramatic effect.
Augustines (or as they have been the past few nights: The Gruesome Twosome) just killed it tonight in Durham, NC! Unfortunately one of the members has had a family emergency, so the others have played several dates as a duo. Apparently tonight was the last of these shows. It was really intimate. The guys came out into the crowd fer several songs, the crowd sang along, stories, songs from previous bands, and many laughs!
After the show the singer confirmed a return to 'Roo and I could not be more excited!
