I have been talking to Zane Kesey (Ken's son), he has been checking out Willow (my bus) and invited me to do a painting on Futhur! I told him I didn't know about painting over stuff that Ken did but he said that there are plenty of other parts to paint. He just sent me an email and told me he will do his best to arrange a visit for me.
Im friggin' blown away!

I have to say Zane knows talent when he see's it! That is so wicked and what an honour I know Ken will be smiling! Please keep me posted with updates and let us know how it goes! Man oh man the adventures we go on I'm really excited for you!
Is it at all possible you can fly a huge flag from your bus so we can see it up close! ;D ;D ;D ;D
Capt. Congrats and what an honor..... If that doesn't inspire you to get back to your roots of painting for the vibes, I don't know what will. I'll definitely find willow in the lot and swing by.

I just got off the phone with him after 45 minutes of talking and recalling different things for the old days. Its wierd how much just talking to him reminds me of his dad.
I just got the go-ahead from my wife to go Pleasant Hill to paint so I will try to make the trip sometime after Bonnaroo.
I will try to post pictures of Furthurs new stuff when it happens.

that is super amazing, just being able to touch furthur and feel the insane vibes of knowledge and experience that the merry pranksters put it through is not only a priveledge but probably a life changing experience, so adding to that vibe just blows my mind! i am thankful that their are still pranksters out there... definately post some pics when it goes down

I don't know Zane personally, exept one night in Eugene OR I believe he may have asked me not to party on top of Furthur. I first met Ken Kesey a few years before that.
There was a sircle of friend I kept back the and often found myself in strange company. It all started when I was trying to sneak into a dead show at the greaks in Berkeley. Jim King (big Jim or Biker Jim depending on who you are) nabbed and politely escorted me out. I kept running into him and after a while he would just take me in through the back stage door. I started running into people back there. I was introduced to Owsley Stanley (Bear) the old sound guy and started getting backstage passes. Brian Auger was the production manager for BGP, he was turned on by some of my art and was asked to do some stuff from time to time. I met Jerry,at an Oakland show and was taken by how short he was. I stay at a guys house in marin county just 3 houses down from Carlos Santana but I moved up to Eugene Oragon. I started touring full time and working the ground crew with Jane Sullivan and met Wavy Gravy at Electric on the Eel show where I did some art for the "hog farm" It was just like a chain reaction over several years. It just happened like that. I don't know how I got in those situations but I did and had a hell of a lot of fun doing it.

Owsley is in Austrailia and refuses to come back to the USA. He is the most pariniod person you will ever meet in your whole life. But you have to love him.

That is the coolest story! I can't believe you met all those people! I'm so jealous that you met Jerry! And Wavy Gravy! And Ken Kesey! All of them! Lucky lucky you! Congrats on getting such a great opportunity! I know that you'll do a great job! Can't wait for Bonnaroo...I'll definately be looking for you! Make sure you look good while you're there b/c I'm going to make you take pictures w/ me beside your bus if I find you! ;D

well it all didn't happen overnight, it happened over years of touring. sometimes I would just sit backstage and watch all the differant people. there were the rich poser kids who would just go in and out of the backstage area so they could be seen. There were chicks that were trying to score with Bobby (god I have a story to tell about that) There were the band and thier kids. And then there were interesting people that I enjoyed most of all. Alot of them I never talked to but one time down in southern California (I forgot the show but it was on the campus of U of C) Tim Leary was there but he look old and not very heathy. it was just wierd.
My favorite place to watch and meet people was at Cal Expo. They always had this swimming pool right behind the drums back stage. It had a basket ball hoop and a bath room on Bills side. It was just the coolest thing to float around while the dead were playing space. Mickey's kids were always there and I sat and ate buffet food at one of the picknic tables with Jerrys daughter several times. one time I was out watching the show and they just finished the first set. There was that rush to the bath rooms and the lines were always long. I headed for the bathroom next to the poot because I knew there would be no waiting. I was in a hurry and had to piss bad. I went through the backstage area and was just comming around the back corner of the stage and ran right into Phil... WHAM!!! I was chest to chest with a very shocked base player. well alot of stories and alot of memories later and they are still coming.

I'll be looking for you Captain!!(My husbands nickname too!!) We are taking the trk all the way from Oregon and will bring some NW vibe to the scene!! Love your stories too. We have seen Zane a few times at The Oregon Country Fair ( www.oregoncountyfair.org ). Two years ago when Ken died there was a big memorial for him and my husband got a chance to meet Mountain Girl that year. It was a great year, Wavy Gravy was there and DSO played a steller show too!! Can't wait for Bonnaroo!! We'll be flying a flag..I'll post as soon as I know which one....
right on, thats great to hear they want you to paint for them, by the looks of your work you definately have talent, unlike myself that cant paint a good stick fugure
