I've seen GWAR twice in Knoxville, once at the urging of a friend and the second time with some friends I invited. Their music is TERRIBLE but the stage show is worth seeing.
I don't think they fit in with the "roo vibe," but if they show up I will be there...
Maybe the Superjam will be GWAR, Lady Gaga, and Jimmy Buffett so they can all ruin Bonnaroo together.
Gwar = Flips of metal. Everything people are saying about Gwar has been said about The Flaming Lips, and their shows are always some of the most highly spoke of. I have no doubt that if Gwar is in fact playing that it will be a packed show, which in my mind makes them an absolutely perfect band to play bonnaroo.
When Gwar makes a Yoshimi or the Soft Bulletin then we can talk about this, but The Flaming Lips are much more than a live band.
I'm interested in this for a couple of reasons. One is that I've always wanted to see Gwar, yet have never gone out of my way to see them. With them being on the farm, what better reason to catch them?
Another is that, while this is awesome news and bodes well for future possibilities of heavier/shocking acts like Skinny Puppy (especially them), Throbbing Gristle, Einsturzende Neubauten, or even Slayer, there is a very slight chance that this could, ultimately, turn out to our detriment. I'm not too skeptical, but I'd be disappointed if this opened the door to booking acts that are shocking just for the sake of being shocking... and not being musically good at the same time.
Like I said, though, I'm not worried. Cannot wait to see this show

but this is Gwar, not Kiss who IMO is ALL GIMMICK. Gwar is a good portion gimmick, but its not a gimmick everyone is about in the same way they would be about the pyrotechnics

Yeah seriously what's with the hate on the Lips music around here? Embryonic, Yoshimi, Soft Bulletin, Transmissions, Clouds Taste Metallic, and Priest Driven Ambulance range from very good to great. I haven't listened to GWAR, so I can't comment on their music. But shouldn't Bonnaroo be about the music if anything. The reason Metallica, Pearl Jam, Tool, and Radiohead fit in with Bonnaroo and didn't "ruin" it was because they are all great bands. If GWAR makes good music then fine I'm excited for everyone that likes that genre of music, but if all they are is a gimmick of a live show, then imo they aren't fit for Bonnaroo.

If they are there I will go see it. I have thought about it a few time when they have played the HOB in Myrtle Beach but could never really find anyone to go check it out with me. It sounds like quite a spectacle of a show and a good time.
Does anyone actually like Gwar's music or just the show?
I find the lead singer terrible but their live shows are easily one of the most entertaining shows I've ever seen. That's a good enough reason for me not to miss their show if they are really confirmed.
Why does everything have to be strictly about the music and if it fits into some archetype of what Bonnaroo is "supposed to be about"? I know it's a stretch, but the music might not be art, but surely the amount of effort and time they put into the live show is art, at the very least quality entertainment? You know you'll cheer if they pull out a Kanye blow up doll and decapitate it on stage. That's another thing I look forward to, everyone complaining about their "violent" stage show.
Their show works best in a small setting though. Maybe they'll keep the metal tent from this year, and they'll be the headliner.

Absolutely. Couple that with the fact that they're actually well respected in the industry, and have been for a long time, and you have a justifiably booked act.
For the record, this is one of the very few occasions that I could care less about their music and still want to see them in concert. They're obviously doing SOMETHING right.

HAHAHA...the body condom makes me think Naked Gun! It's true, there really is nothing like a GWAR show! I would recommend at least stopping by for a song or two and checking out everything that's going on.......bloody madness I tell you!

I'm really referring to just their live shows. The Flaming Lips have made some very good studio albums, and definitely have better music than GWAR. Saying this I also feel comfortable saying that The Flips are below average live performers musically. My comments had little to do with the quality of their albums, just a comment on their shows.
I'd be disappointed if this opened the door to booking acts that are shocking just for the sake of being shocking... and not being musically good at the same time.

You have obviously never seen KISS live before, because you wouldn't be saying that if you have. It's a great gimmic, but musically they are very talented, check all 30 something albums they have. I've seen Gwar 2 times, and KISS 3 times, and while both are amazing shows, KISS was better every time by far.
With that said, after my first year at Roo in 06 I said "Roo needs KISS and GWAR" ... pretty sure I even started a thread about the same thing.
Just so happens, the first year in 4 years that I'm not going to Roo thay might both end up playing... that my luck.
I consider myself open-minded and am all for others enjoying themselves at a GWAR set (where I won't be) but I just wanted to post from the hater side of the fence to bring this thread's ratio of "yays" to "nays" down to a slightly more sane level.
Oh snap! This is about as far as you can possibly get from Bonnaroo's roots. It's pure chaos and I dig it. Maybe they can book Green Jelly too and put them back-to-back.
I only know Green Jelly for "Three Little Pigs" but I played the shit out of that song when I was a kid. Wouldn't mind seeing that live. (if they even still play it?)
GWAR is unexpected but cool.
Like others, I'm not a huge fan of their music. I've had friends who have been to their shows and they say it's nuts. They've been around so long that I'd like to cross them off my list as well. I have never went to go see them when they were playing by themselves and I probably never would so being able to see them on the farm would be awesome. Ima watch from a good distance though, especially if they play during the day cause fake blood mixed with sweat sounds really uncomfortable.
I'd be disappointed if this opened the door to booking acts that are shocking just for the sake of being shocking... and not being musically good at the same time.

Boy, GWAR would be the very last band I'd expect at the Roo, but I've always loved the diversity that each June brings.....GWAR?....wow... Bring it on! Why not? Seen em at Sounds of the Underground in Cleveland and I must say, it was entertaining to say the least!
