the existence of the late night Nine Inch Nails show in '09 leaves me a kernel of a dream that we could get the Chili Peppers late night or pre headliner, and still have a another headliner to we don't know of. It's probably going to be Radiohead, Phish and the Chili Peppers, and that will be awesome. but we have 2 1/2 weeks to dream of even more.
I still keep asking myself whether RHCP is bigger now than NIN in 09.
NIN opened for jane's addiction in '09, the chili peppers haven't opened for anyone since '89... there is no question that the chili peppers are bigger, this is a stupid argument based on the fact that some people don't like them and can't seem to wrap their heads around it. They are bigger than Radiohead, NIN, or any other bands from the '90's beside Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Accept it please.
According to Wikipedia, RHCP has sold more records than both Nirvana and Pearl Jam, though.
wow!, i honestly didn't know that, i like nirvana much much more... but i the chillies have more albums... so i guess it make sense
I agree that RHCP is more recognizable to the larger populous, but to the bonnaroo crowd who is (generally) somewhat musically conscious, Radiohead is more liked and distinguished than RHCP. You have to pander to your audience.
I didn't even realize RHCP had sold 70 million records. Good God.

NIN chose to open for them. They usually headline their own arena tours. Big difference.

yeah i was pretty sure NiN has more hit songs and records sold than Jane's Addiction but them opening for Jane's Addiction makes sense
king of limbs 1st week sales: 69,000 i'm with you 1st week sales: 229,000
seriously?, there is no argument. it's done. let it go.
That figure doesn't count the sales that came in mp3 or wma format directly from the bands website, almost 2 months before the mainstream release.
And Radiohead was the highest selling vinyl record of 2011.
And they were nominated for five Grammy's (RHCP's have one).
Argument is such an adversarial word. Discussion, there's a discussion that could be had about which is bigger in 2011. Radiohead is headlining Coachella, they're pretty big.
I hope you don't actually think that figure has anything to do with how big a band is.
i don't think it has anything to do with where a band is listed on a festival lineup poster or a top albums list, but yes album sales mean more people buying and more people listening and more people knowing of this band which means.. yes.. bigger.
So you're ignoring that King of Limbs was sold for two months online before that week? When all the fans bought it? What do the numbers look like for the 9th week of release for the RHCP album?

I think you're giving too much credit to the bonnaroo crowd. Ask everyone on this board which band they heard random people talking up the most in 2010 (Hint: it was probably KOL)

This. Trent talked about making it his choice because he wanted to pay back Jane's Addiction since years ago when NIN was getting started they had him open for them. He decided to play the middle set and promoted it as a 3 show tour (with StreetSweeper Social Club being the first act).
Radiohead is huge, amazing and better live than the chili peppers.... I apologize for getting worked up, but the chili peppers are bigger... Radiohead is headling coachella yes, but the chillies have headlined coachella also and WOODSTOCK twice. c'mon
Is this the same musically conscious crowd that had Eminem as your No.1 last year?, Bonnaroo knows what sells and those two bands together is a great choice, most of my friends who go every year are more meh about radiohead playing than the chillies. I think the crowd at roo has changed and now unfortunately attracts a lot of people who go because of big names, and that is why lil wayne had a huge crowd and string cheese incident did not... it sucks i know, but that is the way it's going to be from now on at roo.
Arcade Fire was second to Eminem, though. Only recently has Arcade Fire truly broken through to the masses. Radiohead's been a staple for a lot longer than AF (not to mention RHCP haven't been huge since Stadium Arcadium). Even though SCI didn't have a huge crowd like Wayne, they were still seventh, because AC knew a certain target demographic for bonnaroo wanted to see it. If we're going by album sales, Lil' Wayne should have been right behind Eminem, but Arcade Fire widens the market. I personally believe Radiohead will be a bigger draw than RHCP. All of my friends interested in going with me to bonnaroo have been talking about Radiohead being on the Farm for the last few years.
But honestly who cares. We got both Radiohead and RHCP and no matter where you put them on the lineup, they're both still there.
