Did we ever figure out the connection between 1 and 3? Was it just that they're both metal? Or should we consider what other metal band on that list above has two drummers? Things like that?

Maybe with another band that Kylesa is touring with, or will be after? Zoroaster?
(The Zoroastrian Calendar is an approximation of the solar calendar; I missed where this sun talk is from in this thread - but I've seen it, and this has to do with sun.)
Random guess of Aziz Ansari coming back. He's been a fast rising comedian and could have worked his way up to a main stage performance. Conan's demise led him to have to tour and take the main comedy act at Bonnaroo.
Common Cast - Aziz is a cast member when it comes to TV and basically a regular member of Bonnaroo. Also can maybe relate Cast to Caste since he's Indian-American.

holy sheeeerrrrrrrtttttt, i think you may have this one...possibly...maybe?
Im new here but I think Megadeth fits the clue really well.
Someone already answered correctly earlier in the thread, we just can't figure out what it is.
I'm going with Motorhead as the correct answer due to "nail on the head" comment that was preempted by all of the "iron" guesses (Lemmy's really into Nazi stuff, you know, Iron Crosses). And you know, the speckled face. Probably wrong, but it's a very good guess.
Yep, that got hidden with a bunch of argueing. This is a list of possible bands after page 53. I think some bands like the Sword are questionable as to whether he said no to them or not. Depends on the time he tweeted and read the tread. Anyway...
Killswitch Engage The Sword Apollo 13 Kyuss Lives! QOTSA Picture Eagles of Death Metal Mastodon Empire of the Sun Opeth Deftones Metallica Rodrigo Y Gabriela The Knife GWAR Praxis RATM Dethklok Sufjan Stevens Bolt Throwers Meshuggah Amon Amarth Tiamat 50 Cent Silversun Pickups Corrosion of Conformity Alice in Chains
Now we just need to start working through and narrowing them down.
Props to Imragegrrr, Cokes, SteveoKnievo and others who worked on the list.

Opeth sounds like Opie, apparently has an album called Watershed, was first mentioned in the four hour time frame between no correct guesses and a correct guess.

So before I left work today, I tweeted the Opeth guess to Gary. Of course, he's not going to confirm or deny my guess but he said he liked what he was hearing in his next tweet (the one about mexican food and scotch).
When I tweeted my Kylsea guess, Gary's next tweet was that he had finally heard the correct answer. So his silence on Opeth makes me think that Opeth is not the correct answer, but we're moving in the right direction.
I think we need some help from some metal lovers. This may be an obscure or less well-known band.
Dudes, I don't know anyone more with these damned clues. It all seemed so much easier when we had djjd to help us in the right direction. We're just going in circles now. I think I'm gonna throw in the towel.

I think perhaps the "similar in element" clue may have to do with the way the clues are solved. In clue 3, the first part had to do with a song, and the second part had to do with a band name. It looks to me like this clue could be solved in a similar way.

Pretty sure the "similar in element" and all related hints were just directing us to the fact that these are both metal bands. Now that we figured that out we can forget about those hints.
Anyway, I'm glad we got a correct answer, now if only we could narrow it down a bit more!
This seems somewhat obvious so I apologize if it's been mentioned already, but I couldn't see it anywhere...
If we go with the idea of the speckled lad being Opie (which would fit with Gary C saying riburroo fell off the right path), then the speckled lad's demise would be Opie's death....Opeth?
Opeth's been thrown around a lot as a possible answer for the clue, but what if they're just part of it, not the answer? If they're the "speckled lad's demise" then the clue ends up: A trip to space thwarted by Opeth. A watershed moment, otherwise.
Can anyone make that fit any of the bands mentioned in the past six pages? I don't know anything about metal bands so I have no idea what Opeth could have thwarted.
...and I'm still sticking with my Empire of the Sun reasoning. Makes the most sense between Apollo 13 and "metal" being Emperor Steele to me. I don't think they'd /actually/ have two metal genre bands within the first 3 clues.
Corrosion of Conformity is metal, and corrosion implies metal. The have a song, "Vote with a Bullet" which contains several denotations of "cast." Votes are cast as well as bullets. John Kennedy, who set the county on a path to the moon, was felled by a bullet, before seeing the completion of his dream. Robert Kennedy, the younger brother, was removed from the ballott by a single vote in the form of a bullet. And, COC is supposed to have an album soon.
Oh, and they have a song, "Pearls Before Swine" which is a reference to the Biblical quote, "Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither *cast* ye your pearls before swine..." And, the abbreviation for the band, COC, is the first 3 letters of the Ron Howard film, "Cocoon," which has both a space and water theme.
Pretty sure the "similar in element" and all related hints were just directing us to the fact that these are both metal bands. Now that we figured that out we can forget about those hints.

From Wiki: Opeth was scheduled to perform in Jordan without a crew due to the fear of terrorist attacks in the Middle East. Opeth's tour manager distributed 6,000 tickets for the concert, but before the band left for Jordan, drummer Lopez called Åkerfeldt stating he was having an anxiety attack and could not perform, forcing the band to cancel the show.[24][25] In early 2004, Lopez was sent home from Canada after more anxiety attacks on tour. Opeth decided against cancelling the remainder of the tour with Lopez's drum technician filling in for two concerts.[26] Lopez promised that he would return to the tour as soon as he could, but two shows later Opeth asked Strapping Young Lad drummer Gene Hoglan to fill in.
Gene Hoglan is best known for his works with the bands Devin Townsend, Dark Angel, Death, Dethklok, Strapping Young Lad, Pitch Black Forecast, Testament and most recently Fear Factory.
Didn't someone mention Dethklok earlier? Testament would be pretty cool too.
We are assuming we are looking for another metal band, so check. Playing off the Ron Howard train of thought with Apollo 13 and the hint from garychardonnay that we are looking for a "similar cast", Tom Hanks was also in the Ron Howard directed Splash previously, a movie about a mermaid. Dethklok has a song by the name of "Murmaider". Just a thought.
